Breakfast in America

These monochromatic paintings pay homage to one of my favorite 1970’s rock band SupertrampBreakfast in America was an LP that I would listen to for hours while working on paintings for my art classes at JCSC.  Hours would fade into minutes and I would still be painting and listening to this album. These pieces are also inspired by the album cover itself which depicts a waitress with a monochromatic collection of objects associated with a diner.  Stopping by the Miss America Diner in Jersey City for a corn muffin and coffee was a frequent event for me before heading to my all-day art studio classes.  In addition, from a cultural perspective, I associate a “breakfast in America” with the black Cuban expresso that my father would make for me in his “cafetera” in the morning before leaving for my classes.  These pieces embrace both my Cuban and American cultures. The choice of the monochromatic palette is a nod to my early college painting days.
